Why does the main memory get used when i put a program on sd card?

ever time that i put a program on the sd card in my axim x50v my main memory goes away and i dont know why (both storage and program get used)
and also im not sure if i shoulda put this is software section or not so if it does belong their then whoever moves the posts, feel free to move it
