Actually your terminology is not quite correct. Main Memory is not what the the OS is installed to. The OS is installed to the ROM, which is persistent and untouched by a hard reset. Main Memory is the RAM, which is what gets deleted with a hard reset.
As Tancerman explained, with every upgrade there is a opportunity to do a backup of the existing ROM. Make sure you do one and you should be able to revert back.
