The best way that I have found to do it is to use a media player called GSPlayer (link in my "My PDA" section). Then, use software that can add a network folder with folders from other computers on the network, I'd suggest Resco Explorer 2005 or PocketLAN. Now, with your music folder shared on your laptop, use Resco or Pocketlan to map the drive of your music folder location.
Go into GSPlayer and then go to file> find file> and navigate to the network folder and select the music folder with include sub directories ticked. Then click OK. THis will take a varying amount of time depending on the amount of songs you have but 6000 songs takes about 5 - 10 mintues, once they are there and you have saved the playlist it is much shorter.
This is not a free way of doing it but it's the way I do it. There may be freeware for this somewhere.
