It is possible but not practical, the analog surround systems Dolby Pro Logic, Pro Logic II and Pro Logic IIx all use matrix encoding to embed surround information in a stereo signal but require an external decoder to retrieve this information. If you connect your Axim to a Surround Amplifier that supports Pro Logic and play Pro Logic encoded material it will come out in surround.
Real surround headphones like those manufactured by
Zalman are not compatible with the Axim as the headphones have 3 separate stereo jacks.
The closest thing you are likely to get working is a pseudo-surround effect which is just that, an effect, not real surround sound.
GSPlayer has this effect as well as bass boost, echo and reverb effects, it is free software and works very nicely. As Don'tPanic! mentioned above
x50mix does the same thing by changing the x50's sound hardware settings which will affect playback of all audio players, but again it is a delay effect not surround sound.

The sleeve conductor (the one closest to the cable) is the ground line. The Axim actually has a 4 conductors inside the 3.5mm (1/8 inch to our American friends) jack as an external microphone can be used if you have an adaptor,
