I did it in the same way like you. I uninstalled my Antivirus, my firewall, nearly everything.
After a complete reinstall (format c:) it worked.
I think, if you install a firewall it changes some things in the network config and an uninstall don't restore the defaults completely.
Wow... I've not went as far as you did to format the c drive. But I glad you get it works for you.

I've tried to reinstall the firewall (ZoneAlarm) and try to sync again and it is amazing works!

But here it comes another problem. Everytime when Activesync connected to my PDA, it create a network adaptor. In doing so it completely mess up with my 802.11g wi-fi connection. My Wi-fi connection seems to be re-connected when the adaptor appears, then a few seconds later, fully disconnected and cannot get it back. I have to reboot to clean this up.

Anyone face this?
