You can also see the Skinning Guide to create your own skin to restore the system colors. The section of importance is at the bottom. This is essentially the same as editing the registry (described below) but is probably safer and easier. Refer to the M$ link to get the default colors you need to restore.
If you are brave you can edit the registry. With your registry editor browse to HKLM\System\GWE. See if you have the following keys present:If they are both present then compare the value data in each. If they are different then you can delete the SysColor key. Next copy the DefSysColor to the same location and rename it to SysColor. Before you do this though you should make a backup of the registry or export the key so you can restore in case something fouls up. You will have to soft-reset to have the changes take effect.
If you can't find the DefSysColor key then you will have to edit the SysColor key. This BLOB key contains hex values for all the system colors that can be changed. See this M$ article on Customizing the System Colors for what each hex value represents.

Thanks DDG, I'll give your suggestions a try. I like the idea of creating a skin, before playing around in the registry.
