Guys, I had the same problem, and I was able to come up with a fix, although it sounds strange.
During the Axim upgrade/Activesync 4 install process and new network connection was created on my computer. My system called it "network connection 3" And it was disabled. Dunno if windows firewall disabled it, but I enabled it and my usb problems went away.
Now as a matter of course it irritates me immensely that microsoft decided unilaterally to create a new network connection without my consent, but at least i know it's there and i can fix it later.
This may not apply directly to you guys, but it's an avenue to explore.
