Are you saying that the x51v does not have a backup battery? The point of the backup battery is to allow one to swap batteries without losing the contents of ram. Does swapping batteries on the x51v make the device do a soft-reset?
Tried psShutXP and it doesn't appear to work as expected. I set a calendar event to remind me in 1 minute. I run psShutXP and the screen turns off. After a minute, the device wakes up with the reminder. I guess it didn't work.
There may be some shutdown utilities for smartphones and WM5 supports smartphone programs... so I'm checking those out.
