This is also posted on another thread, but I wanted to start a new thread on this because the other version of this message is buried at the end of a thread that people might miss.......

(I guess I sort of expected this...)
Is there any way to selectively SYNCH material, or any other way out of this problem? Even if I synch with a different computer, if I EVER synch to my desktop, will it take all my Axim contacts and then put them on the desktop again? I guess that's what synching is supposed to do....
Maybe I could put a copy of Outlook on an SD card, run that from the desktop via USB......but when the AXIM starts to synch with the desktop, .............or am I just stuck here......is that just what synching is all about?

Well, I thought that I could
1)type data to desktop,
2)synch to Axim,
3)
DELETE FROM DESKTOP and have data on PPC but not on desktop, (which is always connected to internet).
4) And I thought that if I wanted to use desktop again to input more contacts, etc. to PPC, (THAT'S THE KEY PROBLEM) I could ONE-WAY SYNC send the contact list, etc. on the AXIM BACK to the now empty Desktop Outlook long enough
5) for me to add some more material via the Desktop keyboard to the Outlook and then with the NEW, revised Outlook on the Desktop, just.....
6)then sync it back to the AXIM with the new changes.
7)and then delete it from the DESKTOP again....

Of course there was the worry that the DELETED OUTLOOK would sync its DELETED SELF back to the PPC (between step 3 and 4 above)and wipe out all the data on the PPC by making it the same as the empty Outlook on the Desktop.
But I thought I had that covered by checking an option that said if there is any "conflict"--to leave the data on the Axim. I thought that meant if there was an issue about deleting, but I guess it was about appointments.....
APPARENTLY WHAT ACTIVE SYNC DOES IS TO DO A TWO-WAY SYNCH, WITH BOTH DEVICES BEING MODIFIED TO THE LATEST CONDITION OF BOTH OF THEM. So, yep, it put the empty Desktop Outlook onto my AXIM--wiping out the contacts, etc. -- while I sat there pounding the Desktop keyboard trying to prevent it. It was like someone butting in on a complex little job you are working on and "helpfully" breaking something while you stand there....It reminded me of the time that I told an elderly aunt that I hurt my thumb and before I could move, she grabbed it and twisted it around to make it "get better".......it hurt for weeks after that.
I only lost an hour's work, (should have at least made a paper backup---stupid me) but I guess there is no way to "fill up" the empty Desktop Outlook with the filled up AXIM Outlook if the Desktop Outlook was changed (deleted) since the last synch. Instead, the Desktop Outlook wipes out the Axim Outlook.
This may all sound NUTS, but it's not really crazy to want to keep certain info off a desktop that's accessible to lots of people (password protection wouldn't be adequate).
Anyone know how to "outsmart" ActiveSync's "helpful" mode of synching BOTH devices to the most recent state of both?
My backup plan is to spring for a keyboard for the Axim and just do it that way.....or learn to backup to an SD card, I guess..which I could remove during the synching, though it would not solve the problem of both Outlooks becoming empty.....I guess ActiveSync isn't the same as "copy file" in Windows, where the copying is one way.........
Unless there is some other way to outsmart Mr. "Do-Gooder" Activesync" who does such a QUICK job of cleaning EVERYTHING up....
any ideas?
