This is what you can do:
1. Type data onto desktop.
2. Sync to transfer everything to PPC.
3. Open up ActiveSync on desktop, and go to Tools - Options and then uncheck Contacts. Make sure you are not connected at this time.
4. Delete the contacts on your desktop and the next time you sync, it will not sync contacts anymore.
5. If later you need to add more contacts to your PPC, you can do it either manually (hopefully not too difficult if there aren't too many to add/change at once), OR, check Contacts in desktop ActiveSync so that everthing syncs back to desktop, make the changes, then start from step 3 again.

Instead of the contacts on the PPC syncing over to the desktop, the recently empty outlook on the desktop synched over to the PPC and wiped out the contacts on that.......
