This to me is such a common problem on X51v. I have exactly the same problem. In fact I've have been quite successfully using my home network and observed the connect just stop and no more pages can be accessed. The situation then remains, without any mechanism to reinstate browser access.

I can/have despite no access to web sites....

a) I can PING my router (and get a reply)
b) I have an 192.168.2.x address
c) My WiFi Icon tells me I have a connection.
d) My Network is Set to "Work" instead of "My ISP"
e) My firewalls are up (and have worked quite successfully), taking them down doesn't solve this problem.
f) Encryption is WPA and again has worked quite successfully with.

The more I examine this problem, the more I'm convinced it is linked to Active Sync setting some kind of switch that prevents access. Something "kicks in" which stops access. The only thing that I can imagine that would kick in is Active Sync. Now that v4.0 prevents WiFi sync, I suspect something very "fishy" to be going on in the comms area on this machine.

The mulitude of Network and Adapter settings on this device though make these sorts of problems exceptionally difficult to diagnose.

All in all, it seems often the only way to get back up and running (if only momentarily) is to perform a messy "hard reset" and go through all the pain of re-instating partial PIM and data backups in a vain attempt to somehow get the machine into a stable communications and network state... only to watch the machine fall over again within a matter of days.
