babbob, yes, that's what I used to do. But ActiveSync wakes up the PDA when on the cradle, turning it on. I'm not only worried about screen life when in cradle for a long time but also it is in my bedroom so at night it makes light. So the temporary solution is to either not leave it on the cradle except to sync and charge, or to make the "press and hold" turn off the screen (but keep PDA running). So I decided to do the latter.
I think I'll just have to wait for the next Dell ROM to fix the CF card and AS issues and stop being so damn picky ;).
Patrick: the noise is from my Hitachi microdrive. I bought my PDA to be an iPod+video+games+PDA+etc and so the "iPod" part is the 6GB microdrive that contains music and occasionally movies. It is normally extremely quiet but sitting right next to me on the desk I can hear it spin up in an otherwise dead quiet room. It quiets down after about 1 second of spin up. The noise doesn't bother me -- it is the fact that the PDA is needlessly wasting battery and drive wear.
