Resco is prettier and more like Windows Explorer and has nicely integrated file encryption. Earlier versions of Total Commander were quite clunky to use and didn't have the registry editor or allow you to map network drives. The latest versions of TC are great though, so unless you've already bought a license or need a specific Resco feature, go for the free one.
Personally I prefer freeware registry editors (there's a few out there) because after an unexpected hard reset when you're out and about you can restore exported registry keys and backups from a storage card without needing to sync with a PC, reinstall the app and enter the license key.
