Thanks for your help everyone: I've tried all the following:
1. Soft/hard reset of my Axim
2. Reinstallation of Activesync
3. Dell's self-help system
4. Dell's customer services helpline- took an hour and no luck
5. Uninstallation of microsoft office
6. Reinstallation of office
7. Reinstallation of updates
...and still the 86000108 code. It's taken me now 4 days of my life that I'll never have again.
I've had enough!
