Are you giving the power button a quick press to turn it on? Pressing and holding for longer will just turn on/off the backlight, but not power it on/off. Also, have you tried a soft reset? (The reset hole is at the back.)

Why so smart? This (soft reset) has worked for many I've relayed your suggestion to!
Nice. Since soft reset, I've heard of no problems.
