VirtualDub can only work with video files that are encoded in some form of Video For Windows (VFW) codec. There are many VFW codecs out there, DivX being only one. However there are also many codecs that are not VFW, so you will need either: a video editor that can work with those files, or a converter utility that will make a VFW version of the file so you can work with it in VDub.
