Not always.

I found (at least at my house) it picks up the distance relatively well (remember, distance is not necessarily a straight line). The problem I had was it pointed the complete wrong way for my wireless router. That probably is something to remember anyway ... how do you know the signal you're picking up is directly in front of you, and not bouncing off of something directly in front of you?

But as I got closer to my router, the distance to the network on the screen got closer.
