Actually since the new WM 5.0 was announced, one of the biggest feature was that from now on, we CAN upgrade OSes as Microsoft pushes them out. Microsoft took that ability from the manufacturers because so many people we unsatisfied with the manufacturers upgrade policies. Also, now that the core of every device is similiar, it'll be more like a PC upgrade and we should expect a more and more unified OS as time goes.

There are certain parts of the OS that CAN be upgraded by Micrsoft and there are then device specific portions that MUST be developed by the vendor.
Is every other WM5 device having the same problems as the X50/X51? No. Which hints to me that it's the specific device customization (ie - non-Microsoft) piece.
