First, you are NOT an idiot. What you did was correct. It doesn't work due to Microsoft's fault. The solution is to format your card from the Pocket PC, using for example Resco or other available tools. You did NOT screw anything permanently. Now, are you sure you have a Sandisk 4GB SD Card? I don't think it even exists. AFAIK, the only 4GB SD Card is from Pretec, and the highest SD Card from Sandisk has 2GB capacity.
