What exactly is not working? you can not copy the file? How big is the file? what is the file format/extension? Let me know what exactly is the problem...

I personally have managed to copy a 512 movie to my SD card using ActivSync

Also, I recommend that you do not use Windows Media Player for your media files other than music. Try TCPMP, it is free and it can play most of the codecs/media formats currently out there.
