new member needs MPEG help

Yesterday I almost bought a Zen vision, but then decided I'll try to get an X51v to do what I need and get it instead.
I've recorded a number of TV programs on my desktop computer as MPEG 1 (VCD) files. They show fine on a laptop (about 600 megs for an hour). I took a show on a CF card to a Dell kiosk today, and couldn't get Windows media player to open it (I want to at least see a file of this size play before I buy the thing).

Is there any way to make the built in video player play a .mpg file? Do I need to change the extension? (I have too many files, and don't want to convert all of them to something other than mpeg 1).
I've read on these forums about a better player (tcmpvp?), but I really wanted to see the thing play first before I bought one.
(and yes, the 2 guys at the dell kiosk knew next to nothing. One tried looking for a "manual" on the dell site, but said he couldn't find one).

Thanks for your help.
