A few more tips I just noticed today:
Where several of us were noticing audio sync issues using the Fraunhofer MP3 codec in mono, I originally said that using the Lame codec in stereo fixed it. Today I played around with using Lame in mono, and so far everything is still staying in sync. This is nice for smaller files.
Also, landscape view seems to be able to deal with 24 fps just fine, at least it does with my 400MHz, but 30 fps gets jerky. Rather than taking a 30 fps DVD and decimating it to 15 fps, use VirtualDub's Inverse Telesine setting (also found on the Frame Rate dialog) which reconstructs a video into its original 24 fps format. If you're encoding for portrait view, this step (same with decimation) is optional - portrait can deal with 30 fps with no problem.
