Or that Dell screwed up the WM5 x50v upgrade, which is already a known issue here. :D The x51v doesn't seem to suffer from that type of problem though, at least not from what I recall.

I assume this in on a Wm2003se device? The best I can see is about 31-32 MB on a WM5 device immediately after a hard reset.
Running with 17MB is pretty low I agree, and likely has a lot to do with the stuff in the background as you mentioned, but I think running on 32-35MB free on a WM5 device is nearly impossible right now.
