I prefer DVD Catalyst, found at http://www.dvdcatalyst.com/

I tried all the other DVD conversion programs, and liked DVD Catalyst the most because:

1) It is one of the cheapest programs compared to the others

2) Ease of use, and doesn't crash (many of the others seem to crash easily or have problems with some DVDs)

3) Gives the right balance in options in the encoding. Some programs give too many options, becoming too complex, whilst others give no control over the encoding process except eg file size. I like to have control over basic things like bit rate, cropping, 1-pass/2-pass etc, as well as an easy to use wizard.

4) Supports more codecs than others in a very easy to use format. I particularly like encoding in H264/AVC which the Ipod and HDDVD/Blueray video will use, because of its great compression to quality ratio. TCPMP (latest beta) can play the video using the appropriate plug ins.

5) Can also do batch conversion of files, saving lots of time. eg set the program to convert several episodes from the DVD overnight, and in the morning, they are all converted rather than go through the process one by one. Only drawback is that it doesn't have a "Turn off the computer when finished" option.

It has a free 5 day fully featured trial period also (most of the other programs offer a very limited functional trial only)

It costs $17.95 at Handango, and if you search the forums here, you might be lucky and find a 20% off coupon, bringing the cost down to only $14.36
