Why can't / won't ActiveSync hide?

I suppose there must be a perfectly good reason (or a control feature I'm missing) why ActiveSync - in my case, 3.8 - doesn't operate quietly and discreetly from the System taskbar or conversely, doesn't live there when minimized? I mean, aside from Microsoft just being too cheap and lazy to build this into the program...

HotSync with my old Palm lived happily in the System Taskbar with full access to it and its settings from there. A HotSync, when requested, was done with a minimum of fuss and I wasn't left staring at the program after it had finished. One the sync was done, Hotsync disappeared back into the background. Insofar as the default setting for ActiveSync is to be continuously running, doesn't it make sense to do so in the background and not as a honking great dialog in the middle of your screen?

Just asking? Maybe in ActiveSync 4? No? 5? Uh, never?

Not sure I totally follow, but clicking the red X in the top right corner should minimize activesync.

With HotSync, activating a sync (either from the PDA or via the icon in the System Taskbar) resulted in the program running briefly on-screen (with the various 3rd Party conduits doing the same), but once done, the program then minimized back to the taskbar.
In my experience, ActiveSync kicks in at boot (if the PDA is connected) or when the Axim is placed in its cradle. It then presents a dialog box as it runs and then...its still there.

Minimize ( _ ) sends it to the user taskbar. Are you saying that Close ( X ) doesn't shut down the program but sends it to the System Taskbar instead, leaving it running/syncing quietly if the default 'run continuously' is left as is?

Excuse me for being particularly thick.

That is exactly what I am saying. Note the little green sync icon on the taskbar even after you click the X. If you would like the big box to come back. Doubble click the little green icon.

You could just give it a try. Might be faster then waiting for me to respond. Good Luck~

OK, fine, I got that. I'm assuming therefore it is syncing as set in Options (default: continuously) while there? Thanks for that.

So the next step - and again referring to my experience with Palm HotSync and there appears to be no equivelent setting in ActiveSync - what is the best way to imbed ActiveSync into the System Taskbar (mimimized but active) at boot? Can it be done via the Start > Programs > Startup folder - or would that simply do what is done automatically (if the PDA is connected at boot) anyway - start ActiveSync and have the dialog box come up to be manually minimized?

Of course, once I get this all settled, my next challenge will be to make Outlook 2002 work in a useful way....

;)

The box will come up either when you place your axim in the cradle, or when you turn on your computer if it is already in the cradle. In both cases you have to manually minimize it by clicking the red X. Or change the options in activesync to stop it...

Other then some 3rd party software to control it, ActiveSync is always running ~ Always syncing in the background when ever the Axim is connected. Good Luck~

Go to the Rules tab in ActiveSync Options. There is a checkbox that tells whether ActiveSync should open when a device connects. Uncheck it have it run minimized. You can still open the dialog by double-clicking the icon in tray.
