I did manage to get it working finally, another call to dell. found out you can't even have any kind of firewall INSTALLED. even though norton firewall was off there were pieces there that prevented the connection. removed norton and all was happy in the world.

I’m running Norton Internet Security on my machine and have installed ActiveSync 4.1 and they get along very well as long as you allow the ActiveSync processes in the Personal Firewall’s Program Control.

AC4 is crap...do yourself a favor and go back to 3.8. Remember this old adage:
"If it ain't broke....don't fix it".

3.8 is not compatible with WM05; X51v comes with WM05 and 4.0 / 4.1 are intended to be used with it!

I agree with Cineza. I too have NIS and I haven't had this problem. I looked for ActiveSync 4.1 yesterday and the only one I could find on the Microsoft site was 3.8. I have the CD with 4.0, but I was wondering if 4.1 was a little smoother. It seems like the Dell/MS world has been pretty tumultuous lately.

I'm having the same problem, and tried everything which is listed on that page. It still does not work. Reverted back to WM2003 for now ...

Put me down as having the same issue. x50v w/ WM5 and AS4.1
I can sync fine with Bluetooth, but no USB. I am using Sygate Personal Firewall, and have added the AS .exes to the allow list. Still no go.
Doesn't MS realize that you cannot call something an "upgrade" if you take away functionality.
Very frustrated ...but too stubborn to go back to WM2003SE

OK...got mine working. Basically had to completely remove my firewall software (Sygate Personal Firewall in my case). Once removed and rebooted...worked like a charm.
Now I will see if the built-in WinXP firewall hoses me.

One of the reasons I chose Norton AV/Internet Security is it's ability to work well with 3rd party programs. I could use McAfee for free from several different sources, but the reason I gave up McAfee years ago is because it seemed to slow things down more than Norton and I had more page fault errors with McAfee. I recommend Norton Internet Security to anyone who asks. I also haven't seen a popup ad since I got NIS either.

Did you re-install your Sygate? I run sygate, too, and its frustrating that such a nice firewall interferes with ActiveSync...though that can hardly be blamed on Sygate.
Let me know how it all worked out, I would really like to know where you stand with your software firewall (between you and me, I don't want to put too much faith on the Windows Firewall ;) )

I reverted back to WM 2003 after wasting a whole evening tying to resolve the USB sync issue. Last night I gave it another try and finally found what the problem was:
- configuring the Sygate firewall according to the MS troubleshooting does not help
- Allowing "All" does not help
- Exiting the firewall software does help ... I finally was able to sync :)
So before you uninstall sygate, simply try to close it for the duration of the sync ...

Well after reading some other posts in different threads I took my SD card out of the upgraded X50v and then retried USB sync, worked perfectly. Then put the SD card back in and everything works great. Also using AS 4.1 Bizarre?

As of right now, I an just using the XP Firewall, and I can sync with no issues. I would prefer to use Sygate...but I need Axim Syncing more.

Well, that sucks. I'm behind a router, but I'd feel more secure with my software firewall working. Microsoft better come up with a solution to this dilemma soon; I'd ask who they think they are releasing software that doesn't work with competitors' firewalls, but I already know the answer :\ )

I have this exact same problem too.
I don't believe it is the firewall as I have had Actice Synch working with Zone Alarms quite successfully.
This problem has also coincided with an inability to connect to the internet with IE via my wireless network (despite being able to connect and ping the router successfully).
I am certain the two problems are related. The whole PDAs connectivity issues seem exceptionally shoddy, unpredictable and shoddy.
I am close to returning the Unit.
Where are the fixes? Does anyone from Dell or Microsoft read these forums. The support is next to useless and seems to result in "Do a soft reset, do a hard reset, uninstall this, reinstall that" THIS DOES NOT STOP THE PROBLEM HAPPENING!!!
Grrrrrrrrr
