Activesync 4.0/4.1 unable to sync via USB
my X51v is giving me a headache. It used to work until last week, then all of a sudden it stopped syncing. it just sits there saying "connecting". I have tried uninstalling activesync, verifying ceutil.dll and rapi.dll are removed, soft reset the device, HARD reset the device, removed all profiles from active sync and finally called dell and did it all over again.
Does anyone have any other suggestions to get it working? I cannot verify bluetooth syncing or IR syncing, I don't have adapters for those. and of course M$ took out wifi syncing...(grrrrrrrrrr) thanks!

if you have zone alarm firewall it will not sync. Also, when installing apps I never get the pop window that says "yes/no install using default directory" This allows you to choose "no" and install Apps on a memory card. How do 4.1 and 4.0 users install apps on a mem card? Thanks.

I get this problem too, except I have never got the usb cradle to sync, it sits there and says "connecting" for ever... However if I point my X51v at my laptops IR port and hit sync via IR it works fine...
I have tried everything I can think of, checked drivers, uninstalled, re installed, used direct UBS port, usb hub both powered and non powered.

I did manage to get it working finally, another call to dell. found out you can't even have any kind of firewall INSTALLED. even though norton firewall was off there were pieces there that prevented the connection. removed norton and all was happy in the world.

One thing that I found in order to pinpoint the problem was to uncheck all sync options (in active sync window - tools, options). And then one by one add the calendar then sync. Add the contacts then sync, etc. There could be a conflict with one of the options. Mine was with favorites. I know how frustrating it is to not be able to sync, especially when in a hurry.
THEN TRY THIS Open Outlook on the pc Open the inbox click tools tab click preferences click email options put a check mark in each box BUT the top one on replies....do not include on forwarding....include NO CHECK IN BOTTOM BOX --------------------------- click mail setup tab click email accounts check the view or change box this brings up another page showing the email accounts that you have set up....it should not be blank highlight your account and click change look very closely...this is where most errors occur...look at every word, every period all 6 boxes need to be filled in leave secure authentification unchecked now click on "test account settings" did it pass? if so...problem solved if not, cick the "errors" tab and tell me what it says there are several other settings but lets stop here and see if it now works...if not, we'll look further remember to let me know! ken

A word to all here. I have owned an x50v 624 mzh for less than 2 months. Though I've patiently waited for Dell to send WM5 upgrade media I already paid for, I thought I'd try customizing to enhance usability.
In short, I just purchased (but have not installed) an StowAway BT keyboard. The advice given by TO is to install the lastest driver with AS4. I found AS4 on a non-MSFT site and installed it. Since then, I have not had one successful synch. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, downgraded back to AS3.8, rebooted and tried again countless times in the past 48 hours. In scouring the web, I have found a number of HP support forums chock full of AS4 problems. I am now embarking on a reinstall of AS4 after a complete removal of AS3.8 and Reg Mechanic sweep. The one point of advice that seems consistent is to either disable software firewalls on host PC or open several specific TCP ports for AS4. Those ports are 5678, 5679, 990, 26675, and 5721. Its reported that the AS4 install routine should handle this automatically, but I've turned of my WinXP SP2 firewall for the time being. I'll report back on my outcomes.

Unresolved - AS4 USB Limitations
It turns out that AS4 requires a USB 2 connection.
After repeating every step listed in my prior post on our brnad new desktopw/USB 2 ports, I sync'ed easily. I even installed the new Think Outside BT keyboard driver in seconds. I've already ordered a USB 2 PC Card for my laptop. UPDATE - I got my hands on a PC Card earlier this evening. Went through a reinstall of AS4 and got the same aggravating sync crash!!!! Anybody have any thoughts beyond a full reinstall of Windows, as someone else here has done??

Unbelievable
I'm having the same problem with Activesync - it initally worked on both my home and work computers but after a week or so it stopped - I can't believe that the only way to sort it is to remove the firewall (with the problems that could cause) the firewall at work is beyond my control anyway and that is the computer I connect to most. I did ring Dell for assistance but they are so inept that they cant find any records of me having bought it from them! Where else would I get a X51v from?

I had this problem yesterday using the Belkin USB cable on my 51v. Turns out that my battery was at 30% which appears to have been the problem. I could NOT get a USB sync but IR would work. The screen would flicker and dim while trying with USB.
Charged the battery to full then tried USB again and all was well. Just hope that this helps someone else.

You don’t have to deactivate your firewall, just need to add ActiveSync application processes to the exception list. You’ll find more info here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...c/default.mspx
