Exclamation Activesync 4 + WM5 --> Blue screen everytime!

Hello,

I've just received my X51V a few days ago and I'm totally confused. I'm a long time PPC user so I should know what I'm doing. But please correct me if I'm wrong.

First of all I have the AS 4.0 that comes with the CD, everythings go fine until I connect my x51v to my Dell laptop via the USB port. I just get a blue screen of my Window XP SP2 everytime the Activesync green icon start to circle around. The error message is different everytime:

-) tcpip.sys - Address B50B26EF base at B50A6000.....
-) vsdatant.sys - Address B5083D09 base at .........
(DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL)
-) BAD_POOL_HEADER
-) etc.....you name it

So I search google, found someone saying it's the firewall, uninstall my ZoneAlarm, rebooted, and still no-go.

I've tried to reinstall the whole thing, hard reset my x51v, still no-go!

Now I can only sync my PDA using Activesync 4.1 which allow me to do it via bluetooth. I've tried to do it in other laptops and still the same result. The funny part is that I tried it on a Dell DESKTOP and it works fine!

Anyone facing this too?

Me too!

I have the same problem!!! Tryed ActiveSync 4.0, 4.1 leaked, etc. BSOD all the time. I'm running on a Vaio S460.

But the same Axim connects just fine on my friend's computer using ActiveSync 4.0. I think it's a hardware- or driver-related issue.

Any luck with your setup? Please let me know!!

Sadly, this is the worst ActiveSync+USB Driver I have used. :-(

Althought MS has admitted there's a problem with the Activesync but it did not mention any blue screen stuff.

I've tried to use a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card with my Dell laptop and connect the X51V to it. The card use NEC chipset (different from the Dell's laptop which use Intel's). Still got the same blue screen error. I can only do it via bluetooth now. Darn....

Can anyone who success with the activesync tell us what chipset is your USB controller using?

Well, that's "good" news ;-) At least we know that it is now a chipset-related problem. It's probably an(other) ActiveSync bug. I'll let you know if I find something new!

I had the same problem.
My problem was Kaspersky Antivirus. Turn of the NETWORK PROTECTION.
If you have a firewall (not WindowsFirewall) turn it off.
Microsoft knows this problem and is working on a fix.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 9300.

To me, this is not a firewall thing. Please read my first post on the top. I have completely uninstalled my ZoneAlarm, turned off the Windows' firewall, rebooted, and still get the blue screen when I try to sync.

Oh, I'm sorry.
I've forgotten one importent sentence.
I did it in the same way like you. I uninstalled my Antivirus, my firewall, nearly everything.
After a complete reinstall (format c:) it worked.
I think, if you install a firewall it changes some things in the network config and an uninstall don't restore the defaults completely.

So I made a complete reinstall, tried activesync after every software installation and I found out that it was my Antivir and my Firewall.
I installed the Anitvir without network protection and it worked.

For me it's a problem with activesync and a firewall software.

History:

Install acitvesync w/ antivir and firewall -> bluescreen

format c:

install activesync w/o antivir and firewall -> worked

install activesync w/ firewall -> bluescreen

uninstall firewall -> bluescreen

format c:

install activesync w/ antivir -> sometimes bluescreen

deactivated Network protection from antivirus -> no bluescreens since
about 20-35 syncs and using windows firewall.

I hope Microsoft will fix that problems in activesync very soon.

Wow... I've not went as far as you did to format the c drive. But I glad you get it works for you.

I've tried to reinstall the firewall (ZoneAlarm) and try to sync again and it is amazing works!

But here it comes another problem. Everytime when Activesync connected to my PDA, it create a network adaptor. In doing so it completely mess up with my 802.11g wi-fi connection. My Wi-fi connection seems to be re-connected when the adaptor appears, then a few seconds later, fully disconnected and cannot get it back. I have to reboot to clean this up.

Anyone face this?

I was having the same problems with BSOD and USB. I could only sync with Infrared, but that was sooo slow. I was about to send back my x51v and tell Dell not to release products till they had done some thorough testing, when I stumbled across this website below.

ActiveSync Help and How Tos

Imagine my suprise, an actual web page that was helpful at www.microsoft.com

Followed the advice ... no more BSOD. I have been sync'ing fine for 2 days now.

So summary for those that don't want to read all that!

ActiveSync 4 uses the TCP stack, and therefor creates a network connection with the Windows Mobile Device (In my case the Axim).

1) Disable firewall or configure firewall to allow ActiveSync to talk across TCP ports.
Quote:
Note: ActiveSync files include:
*Wcesmgr.exe
*Wcescomm.exe
*Rapimgr.exe
*Ceappmgr.exe

ActiveSync also uses the following TCP ports for communication to/from these processes:

*990
*999
*5678
*5679
*5721
*26675
2) Bring up the Properties page for the Windows Mobile Device Network Connection, and unbind (remove the check) from everything except the following.

Quote:
* Client for Microsoft Networks
* File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
* Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
3) I don't know if a reboot pf the PC and a soft reset of the Axim are necessary, but I did them for good measure. Then I attempted a USB sync with success for the first time.

Finally if you've done the above and are still having trouble, check for applications that play with the TCP stack (Network Utilities, Parental Control software, etc.) and figure out how to unbind them from the Network Connection the isn't.

Hope this helps, I am off to actually make my Axim a useful time waster. :approve:

Guys, I had the same problem, and I was able to come up with a fix, although it sounds strange.

During the Axim upgrade/Activesync 4 install process and new network connection was created on my computer. My system called it "network connection 3" And it was disabled. Dunno if windows firewall disabled it, but I enabled it and my usb problems went away.

Now as a matter of course it irritates me immensely that microsoft decided unilaterally to create a new network connection without my consent, but at least i know it's there and i can fix it later.

This may not apply directly to you guys, but it's an avenue to explore.
