No, I'm afraid that the setting is correct - for work, and changing to internet or work still causes the same problem.

Thanks for the try

I did some more tests and the problem still exists even if i unselect all the sync options (email, contacts, favorites, etc)

So the problem seems to be in the establishment of the connection and not in the syncronization.

I will continue with some more tests but if anyone has some good ideas....

I guess i should try another solution but i am too stuborn to know when to quit..

I did some more tests today and I haven't really stopped to think out what is the likly block in the system or what the next step should be.

Perhaps someone with a good sense of logical deductions (Elementry dear TwoJ ) can deduce the problem and point me in the right direction.

The 1st test was to hard reset the x50v and create a partership on a virgin laptop with AS 3.7.1, I did a standard sync. Next I connected the laptop to the internet through a dial-up ISP connection, I then took the x50 and tried to remote sync through its wifi connection to my router;
ie: x50v->wifi->Linksys WRT54gs (w/dd-wrt firmware)->DSL ISP->internet ->modem ISP->Laptop w/ AS v3.7.1
This resulted in the "critical communications..." failure

The 2nd test was to connect the x50v through my cell phone to the internet;
ie: x50v->Cell Phone modem->Modem ISP->internet->modem ISP->Laptop w/ AS v3.7.1
This works! :approve:
However next is to resolve why the 1st setup is not working

I guess next i should attempt to see if i can sync with x50v->cell phone modem->Modem ISP->internet->DSL ISP-> Laptop w/ AS v3.7.1 and ->internet->DSL ISP->Linksys WRT54gs->Laptop w/ AS v3.7.1

If anyone has some ideas what could narrow down the search - i would appreciate any help

Solution Found!!! :approve:

Well after the testing yesterday it was just a matter of finding the where the block was.
As a bit of review (as hopefully this might benifit others), I was trying to remote sync from my x50v on a wifi network on the outside (i was trying at work which has a linksys A/G router used as an AP). However this situation is comparible to access at an internet cafe or being on a friends wifi network.
Anyways I wanted to remote sync to my computer at home, my computer sits behind a linksys WRT54gs.
Following ikehiker's great guide i followed all the steps and forwarded the ports to my computer.

The block was actually that the port(s) on the other side (ie the remote wifi network - the one the x50 is connecting through) have to have the ports open to be able for the sync to work! I did some tests and the remote sync worked as soon as i opened TCP 990 (rapi - remote api) to the x50v.

So now that this little detail is worked out it leads to 2 other question;

1) Is there any ppc program that can determine which ports are open to it (specifically the Activesync ports 990,999, 5678, 5679) to quickly determine if Activesync would work.

2)At work i can go into the configuration to open that port which will allow me to sync, however i believe most home networks at friends places, or internet cafe's would have this port blocked by default, hense they would have to access their router to unblock it for me which is not very convient.
Not to mention that most places would assign a dynamic IP, hense either everytime i returned to a friends place they would have to reconfigure the IP to forward that port or assign a static IP that i would have to reconfigure the x50 for each network that i would want to remote sync on. Needless to say this is not a very elegant solution. If anyone has some suggestions on how a more elegant solution might work i would appreciate any insight.

Thanks

Well i hope it does help someone, it really is nice to have the ability to do a sync while away and get all the emails. Of course the devil is in the details and although you read that a certain port has to be open for the connection to work you sometimes forget to consider that on remote connections you are working with 2 networks and a lot of networks have firewalls and filtering of some type.

Anyways i did a remote sync with just activesync and pockethosts to redirect to my home IP and I did one with VPN as both are described in IkeHikers guide. As i described in the previous post to have a remote sync you need the port 990 open on both sides, which if you take a standard Linksys wireless router it will normally be blocking that port, while i believe it does allow for VPN bypass (pptp?)by default. So for those wanting to do remote sync it is good to be able to do both but the vpn way will probably be more useful if you find yourself connected to some SSID called linksys.

Best of luck

Try "netsh winsock reset" in WIn XP SP2 computers and restart the computer.

For others manual removal of winsock keys and reinstalling them will work.
follow the article KB811259

Worried Same problem with USB to PCC connection

I have the same problem with the direct USB connection. Both the PC and PCC say that they are connected but optons and most other thungs are grayed out. I get the same message when I connect, abd again if I try to "explore device". A mobile device window pops up, but it is empty, then the hated "critical communicatons....."pops up.

I have tried everything I know. I have been ale to sync it on a friends computer, but not on mine, so II suspect that some king of communication service on my PC is not working.

Any help would be appreciated.
