Critical communications services have failed to start...
Okay, i've seriously researched for many many hours about this...but still, ActiveSync over wifi does not want to co-operate.

I've followed every step exactly at http://wifi.aximsite.com/sync.html, but still no go.

Everything else is working perfectly fine; I can access my shared folders on my PC, etc etc.
It starts to connect, it chimes, then the message pops up
"Critical communications services have failed to start. Try resetting the mobile device, and then connect again."

I've already done the following:
-completely turned off the sp2 firewall, even to the point of resetting it to defaults (somebody said that helped)
-enabled netbios under tcp/ip
-hard reset
-reinstallation of activesync multiple times

I've looked through tons of threads about this error on aximsite and on other forums, and the majority of them either haven't been resolved or are firewall errors.

My router is a wrt54g (with dd-wrt firmware), if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance for any kind of input you could give me.

(I'm new to PDAs/PPCs btw, this x50v is my first ever, and I just got it two days ago )

What version of ActiveSync are you using? WiFi sync will not work with version 4 or greater. Use version 3.8 instead.

If you're using Zonealarm as a firewall, make sure that under Firewall, Main, Advanced, you've checked the box for "Allow uncommon protocols at high security."

Can you access the internet and/or get email over the wireless connection?

Is the error message you receive on the PC or the PPC?

A hard rest on your PDA would be a lot simpler than a reformat of your desktop's hard drive.

One thought: it might be due to low resources n your PDA. You could try uninstalling any third party Today screen plug-ins.

Hey Lat,
Try these settings before doing anything to drastic:

Open Outlook on the pc
Open the inbox
click tools tab
click preferences
click email options
put a check mark in each box BUT the top one
on replies....do not include
on forwarding....include
NO CHECK IN BOTTOM BOX
---------------------------
click mail setup tab
click email accounts
check the view or change box
this brings up another page showing the email accounts that you have set up....it should not be blank
highlight your account and click change
look very closely...this is where most errors occur...look at every word, every period
all 6 boxes need to be filled in
leave secure authentification unchecked
now click on "test account settings"
did it pass? if so...problem solved
if not, cick the "errors" tab and tell me what it says

there are several other settings but lets stop here and see if it now works...if not, we'll look further
remember to let me know!
ken

still the same problem. i don't think it has anything to do with outlook, i've tried without syncing outlook (i didn't even have outlook installed when i first got the x50v).

maybe i should just get a bluetooth dongle...sigh.

One thing that I found in order to pinpoint the problem was to uncheck all sync options (in active sync window - tools, options). And then one by one add the calendar then sync. Add the contacts then sync, etc. There could be a conflict with one of the options. Mine was with favorites. I know how frustrating it is to not be able to sync, especially when in a hurry.

At least i am not alone :-(

I have, i think, the exact same problem, I cannot remote sync with my home computer. everytime i launch activesync from the axim (x50v) it connects to my computer and then after a few seconds it gives me the 'Critical communications ...' error.

it syncs fine when in the cradle or through wi-fi when it is on the network at home, but whenever i try from outside my network it comes up with that error.

Funny enough i have a Linksys WRT54gs with the dd-wrt firmware, although i do believe i tried with the original linksys firmware and it had the same problem, but i'm not positive.
I have put my computer in the DMZ for the router and tried and still the same problem.
I will try to unselect all the sync options and see if that has any effect.
One problem that i hope is corrected is that i had installed AS4 and then reverted to AS v3.8, it seems a lot of people encountered this error when reverting since several files were not reverted back to the v3.8 version. I have since uninstalled v4 and deleted most of the files asscosiated with v4 that i know of and then re-installed v3.8, according to the install log everything should be v3.8

I'm anxious to get the remote sync working - i'd appreciate any ideas yet to try.
thanks\

Silly question: on the PPC, did you remember to specify "This connection connects me to WORK instead of INTERNET"? Once I had this setting enabled on my X50v, I was able to sync using WiFi. FYI - I cannot do this now because I upgraded to the X51v.

Check your firewall settings and make sure "Windows Explorer" has internet permission. I had this same problem when I first setup an Ipaq and it was a firewall setting issue. As a quick check, disable your firewall and see if that makes a difference.
