Mad Active Sync won't install

I've just received my refurbished X50 and am trying to install the activesync software on my laptop (XP home--Pentium M 1.3 ghz, 640 mb ram). I can't get the install cd to run. I've tried shutting down all but the bare essential programs, setting up by running the setup.exe file directly, and copying all the files to my hard drive and installing from there. None of these worked. I tried the same thing on my wife's computer, same results. I don't think it's my CD drive. In fact when I tried downloading activesync 3.8 from MS and installing it, it wouldn't install either. Anyone have any ideas on what's wrong? I did a search of the problem on this forum and found a couple of similar problems, but nobody's come up with a solution.
Anyone have any ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Delete the ActiveSync folder on your PC and also clear the temp folder of all its file content. Restart the installation process.
If you get dead silence after breaking the speed of sound, would you be in the darkness after passing the speed of light?

Do you get any error messages that might help us figure out what is happening? Check your running tasks using task manager and see if WCESMgr.exe is running. If it is, end the task and try again. Also, check if you have antivirus software running. Temporarily disable it if you do. One other thing, can you install other programs? What I am getting at is, do you have local admin rights to install these programs?

I found the solution. A posting on the microsoft.public.pocketpc newsgroup from Feb. 20, 2003 entitled 1 Solution: Activesync/Win XP Install (author Michael Sean Brown) had the answer that worked for me. I was able to install Active Sync 3.8 downloaded from Microsoft on to my laptop using the procedure outlined in the post. Of course, I didn't use the installation CD that came with my Axim, but as long as I have Activesync installed I don't think that really matters.

Thanks for all your suggestions
