I want to use my Axim for contacts. But I DON'T want those contacts on my desktop PC, which is always connected to the internet. I tried typing contacts into OUTLOOK on the Desktop, then synching it to the Axim. Nice and fast. THen I erased it from the desktop, and it erased it from the AXIM! (I guess I sort of expected this...)
Is there any way to selectively SYNCH material, or any other way out of this problem? Even if I synch with a different computer, if I EVER synch to my desktop, will it take all my Axim contacts and then put them on the desktop again? I guess that's what synching is supposed to do....
Maybe I could put a copy of Outlook on an SD card, run that from the desktop via USB......but when the AXIM starts to synch with the desktop, .............or am I just stuck here......is that just what synching is all about?
Open ActiveSync on your PC and go to Options , remove the check in front of Contact. Syncing won't happen anymore.

Thanks for the info.......I suppose I can type it on the PC, synch it to the Axim, disconnect the AXIM, delete it from the PC, reset activesynch to that it won't synch the contacts (as you suggested). And later, if I want to add something using the convenience of typing it into the computer, I can do that, then, well, if I try to synch the new contact over to the Axim, it might erase all the other ones on the Axim......but I could, first, synch everything from the Axim back to the desktop, then type in the new contacts, then synch it all back to the Axim, disconnect the Axim, then delete it from the desktop.
I know this sounds CRAZY--but it would be easier to actually do than to describe in this message.........and in any case, probably much faster and easier than tapping each letter of the contact into the Axim!
Just as long as I don't get sloppy and synch an empty outlook into the Axim and lose everything! WHEW! Maybe it is nuts, but it might work that way....
THe point is that the desktop is connected to the internet 24/7, and I'm sure that someone could run off with all the info on my AXIM, but I'm still trying to use the convenience of typing into the desktop as an easier way to enter data.......it sounds crazier than it is.....i think?
somewhere down the line, i'll get a keyboard.........
You can also set up Activesync to only sync certain 'Categories'. So once the contacts are on your Axim, set a category for the item and ensure that category is not allowed to sync with your PC.

Well, I thought that I could
1)type data to desktop,
2)synch to Axim,
3)DELETE FROM DESKTOP and have data on PPC but not on desktop, (which is always connected to internet).
4) And I thought that if I wanted to use desktop again to input more contacts, etc. to PPC, I could ONE-WAY SYNC send the contact list, etc. on the AXIM BACK to the Desktop long enough
5) for me to add some more material via the Desktop keyboard to the Outlook as it appeared on the Desktop.....
6)then sync it back to the AXIM with the new changes.
7)and then delete it from the DESKTOP
Of course there was the worry that the DELETED OUTLOOK would sync THAT back to the PPC (between step 3 and 4 above)and wipe out all the data on the PPC by making it the same as the empty Outlook on the Desktop.
But I thought I had that covered by checking an option that said if there is any "conflict"--to leave the data on the Axim. I thought that meant if there was an issue about deleting, but I guess it was about appointments.....
APPARENTLY WHAT ACTIVE SYNC DOES IS TO DO A TWO-WAY SYNCH, WITH BOTH DEVICES BEING MODIFIED TO THE LATEST CONDITION OF BOTH OF THEM. So, yep, it put the empty Desktop Outlook onto my AXIM while I sat there pounding the Desktop keyboard trying to prevent it. It was like someone butting in on a complex little job and breaking something while you stand there....It reminded me of the time that I told an elderly aunt that I hurt my thumb and before I could move, she grabbed it and twisted it around to make it "get better".......it hurt for weeks after that.
I only lost an hour's work, (should have at least made a paper backup---stupid me) but I guess there is no way to "fill up" the empty Desktop Outlook with the filled up AXIM Outlook if the Desktop was changed (deleted) since the last synch. Instead, the Desktop Outlook wipes out the Axim Outlook.
This may all sound NUTS, but it's not really crazy to want to keep certain info off a desktop that's accessible to lots of people (password protection wouldn't be adequate).
Anyone know how to "outsmart" ActiveSync's "helpful" mode of synching BOTH devices to the most recent state of both?
My backup plan is to spring for a keyboard for the Axim and just do it that way.....or learn to backup to an SD card, I guess..which I could remove during the synching, though it would not solve the problem of both Outlooks becoming empty.....I guess ActiveSync isn't the same as "copy file" in Windows, where the copying is one way.........
This is also posted on another thread, but I wanted to start a new thread on this because the other version of this message is buried at the end of a thread that people might miss.......

Unless there is some other way to outsmart Mr. "Do-Gooder" Activesync" who does such a QUICK job of cleaning EVERYTHING up....
3. Open up ActiveSync on desktop, and go to Tools - Options and then uncheck Contacts. Make sure you are not connected at this time.
4. Delete the contacts on your desktop and the next time you sync, it will not sync contacts anymore.
5. If later you need to add more contacts to your PPC, you can do it either manually (hopefully not too difficult if there aren't too many to add/change at once), OR, check Contacts in desktop ActiveSync so that everthing syncs back to desktop, make the changes, then start from step 3 again.
Like I posted...try setting categories. Try a couple contacts with this and see if it works for you.
Enter the contact in Outlook and synchronize it.
Go into Contacts on your Axim, find the contact, open it, tap Edit, and scroll down to Categories.
Set a Category for this contact (e.g. Personal)
Now go back to Activesync on your PC, click on Tools > Options > Contacts > Settings. In here are sync settings. Click on "Synchronize only those contacts in the following selected categories" and uncheck "Personal".
Now any Contacts marked as Personal should no longer sync. Delete the contact from Outlook. In theory, the Contact should now stay on the Axim since you've categorized it as 'Personal' and that category no longer syncs.

Instead of the contacts on the PPC syncing over to the desktop, the recently empty outlook on the desktop synched over to the PPC and wiped out the contacts on that.......

This might work. I'll try it. BUT, when I enter a new contactby keyboard on the desktop, I guess I would NOT categorize it as Personal or it then won't sync to the PPC. After I enter it without any category, then, supposedly, it would sync to the Axim as a general entry. Then I could disconnect the Axim, and then ON THE AXIM, recategorize the entry as "Personal" and get it on the same list as the others......
I'll try that with some dummy samples and let you know if it works.......Thanks..........
