ERROR: This version of Microsoft ActiveSync is not compatible with...

I have a Dell Axim X50v. Ordered and received disks from Dell to upgrade to WM5 and AS4. (XP
Professional with Service Pack 2 and all critical patches.) Installed
exactly per directions - no problems - until the first time I tried to
sync. I get this error message:

"This version of Microsoft ActiveSync is not compatible with the
connected mobile device. Please upgrade to the latest verison of
ActiveSync and reconnect."

I click "OK" and it sits there and says "Connected" but no spinning
green circle. Cannot explore mobile device. No ability to "delete
partnerships". Dead in the water.

I have tried all methods to fix including the ones on the MS web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmob...nc/default.mspx
as well as multiple ideas I found on various tech forums. I use
ZoneAlarms firewall but it and all other applications are always turned
off for installs and while troubleshooting.

I'm tempted to format one of my old computers, do a clean XP install
and install AS4 to see if I can rule out other software issues in a
barebones environment. I consider myself pretty knowledgeble and
experienced with computers but this one has me stumped. I'm also
thinking about going back to AS3 and WM2003 as this is getting a bit
frustrating. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I dread calling Dell.

As far as I can tell we are the only ones with the exact same problem.
XP Pro, SP2, all critical updates. Zone alarm off....

Removed previous partnerships
I've tried deleting ActiveSync numerous times and rebooting.
Deleted references to windows ce services in the registry.

Out of desperation I installed AS4 on my girlfriend's laptop and it synced up normally as a guest. (She never had activesync installed)

I didn't want to do a clean install of XP on my laptop so I rolled back to WM2003se using my girlfriend's laptop last night.

AS4 which is still on my laptop syncs up just fine now with WM2003se reinstalled.

In conclusion, I think there is something left over from the previous verison of ActiveSync that identifies it as 3.8

Good luck, I am hoping for a fix but i'm out of ideas.

Did you try finding a copy of the leaked AS 4.1? It might be helpful. You also might try doing the help on Microsoft's site, and add in the openings in Zone Alarm that Microsoft has advised. It helped work for me with Trend Micro.

Thanks, Aldo. At least I know I'm not out there all alone or going crazy. So you are a few steps ahead of me and looks like you confirmed it's an issue with the prior version of 3.8 leaving some residuals on my PC. I'm thinking of rolling back as well. Based on all the issues on all the forums, this software is about as buggy as it gets.
Fyrf - I did try everything in the MS web site -- adding programs to Zonealarm, opening up ports and updating my TCP properties in Network Connections but nada - no change in the error message.

Also, I learned that with AS4 and WM5 I can no longer synch via wi-fi (once I get it up and running). That's a major loss in functionality. What can Microsoft be thinking?
