Gosh... I, too, have the exact same problem and narrowed things down a bit... In my case (x51, WM5, ActiveSync 4.1, Outlook 2003 SP2, everything in French), the contacts and events that will not synch from desktop to PPC (PPC to desktop works) are the ones that have notes in them.
I have been looking for a solution for over a month. I keep finding posts of people who have the same issue and no answer, at all.
I'm desperate because most of my calendar events have notes with them... and they won't sync. No error, nothing, they simply don't appear.
I so wish we could find a solution to this issue :(

I'm in the same boat as others -
any task, calendar or contact item that has a note will not sync.
I've seen a couple threads about this (started one myself), yet I've seen no one that has resolved the problem.
Anyone know how to "elevate" this issue to Microsoft?
One thing I have noticed is that I can sync at home (Activesync 4.1, Outlook 2003) where I can't at work (Activesync 4.1, Outlook 2002). I do have an exchange server at work. I am just trying to sync locally at work though. I have to assume it is a activesync 4.1/WM5/Exchange server issue, since I can sync an old Axim (WM 2002) at work.
Would love to resolve this issue since I don't really like syncing one at work then having to sync two at home. Kind of defeats the purpose of the new x51 =)

I think this is a great idea... I'm not sure it's solely related to exchange though, since we don't have it here at work anymore and that's where I'm trying to synchronize. That said, I am going to install Outlook 2003 and AS on my personal PC at home and see if I still get the same issue or if it's PC related. I guess we'll see :)
I can't believe, with the amount of people who have this issue, that neither MS nor Dell have provided fixes, or that none of us can narrow down the problem to its source. It's getting very frustrating :(

Same problem here : contacts nots syncing properly
Just done a few experiments....
For the contacts that are not synchronising - if I edit them while my PDA is not in its cradle/connected to ActiveSync, when I then reconnect they seem to synchronise OK.
This seemed to work with contacts that were not synchronising both from PDA to Outlook and the opposite way.
Only done a few experiments so far but thought it was worth posting so some others can try.

OK everyone,
Here's a new one to add to the pile...
I have a fresh build on my laptop; connected using AS 4.1, and nothing would sync. It connected, was checking for changes, then contacts popped showing '0/208', but it wouldn't move.
So I removed the partnership, created a new one but elected not to sync contacts. All other part of the PIM sync'd with no problem. Re-enabled Contacts while I was connected, and it still holds at '0/208' so it won't sync contacts at all. Is this possibly due to a corrupt record that's preventing the sync of contacts to start?
Anyone else seen this?
BTW, I have no pictures on my contacts.
Thanks in advance!

I was wondering... has anyone installed the activeSync 4.2 (beta) ? If so, does it solve this huge sync issue ? (I'm on holidays right now and I forgot my sync cable at work... DOH )
If no one has tried, I'll let you know when I have :)

I've been using activesync for a few years now and this is the first time I've had this same problem described here. I recently reformatted my HDD. Activesync synchronised fine (or so I thought), until I discovered some missing contacts on my PPC which were in Outlook. I tried the suggestions posted here but in vain. In the end, I don't know what solved the problem but it's synching fine now. [My system: Winxp SP2, WM6, Activesync 4.5, Outlook 2003.]
Here's what I did :
1. Disconnected the PPC from the computer.
2. Went to C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033. Ran SCANPST.EXE and pointed it to the associated pst file I was using. Allowed it to repair corruptions in the file.
3. On the PPC, went to Start-Programs-Activesync-Tools-Options. Deleted the partnership with the computer.
4. Uninstalled activesync.
5. Deleted remaining activesync folder: C:\Documents and Settings\<YOUR USER LOGIN NAME>\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\
6. Restart the computer and soft-reset the PPC.
7. Reinstalled activesync.
8. Connected the PPC and allowed computer to detect it and establish a fresh partnership.
I ran a sync afterwards and checked to see if the missing contacts were back in my PPC. They were.
Hope this helps.

Active Sync or AXIM - one blames another
My Axim had a new problem. When sync it does not download any contacts and emails at all. Rest are all working. Dell spent 2 hours and blamed Microsoft and went without doing anything. After using diagnostics, email sync succeeded. But contacts no way. Does anybody has solution? I installed outlook and formatted axim too!!

A Fix I Stumbled Upon
Here's what worked for me.
- Uninstall Activesync and delete folder c:\program files\microsoft activesync
- On PPC, remove activesync pc profile: Start > Programs > Activesync > Menu > Options > Delete
- Soft Reset PPC
- Run Scan PST on PC to fix errors
- Backup Your PST File
- Export your Outlook contacts to a Windows CSV file
- Delete all your Outlook contacts from your Outlook Contacts folder
- Import your Outlook Contacts from the CSV file into the Outlook Contacts folder.
- The "File As" flield for all the imported contacts defauls to Last Name, First Name. If you want to change the order of the "File As" field for all your contacts install and run the free Sperry Software Sperry Software - Contacts Sort Order Outlook Add-In
- Install new Active Sync software
- Sync up ppc
- All should be well
NOTE: You'll lose your contact photographs this way as the export does not include them. Otherwise, it worked great for me. What a relief!
