AS working with Hard reset, but not after restor

I was installing a game. It went bad.
It wouldn't AS (v3.7.1) after the install. I've uninstalled AS from computer several times and re installed several times, deleted all profiles, and tryed the same with AS 3.8.
After several soft resets with no luck, I did a hard reset. AS works fine. However, after doing the restore using the built in utility, it restores fine, but AS doesn't work any more. PC finds x50 on usb cable, but AS won't find it. Something in my BU file is jacked. Any suggestions on how to fix with out reloading several hours of stuff and then the long hassel of reconfiguring all the program registrations, etc?
Thanks. I was thinking of copying files after a HD reset to CF card, then restore BU and put files back that are know to be good, but I dont know where and what to copy to even try this.

It's not the backup file per se that is bad; if it were, you would not be able to restore at all. Did you make the backup right before you did your hard reset? If so, you merely restored back the old problem. That's why it's good to do regular backups, not only before a hard reset. If you don't have any other backups to restore to, I would just manually reinstall.
