Exchange Server
Is it true that in order to setup activesync to synchronize from a server I need Microsoft exchange server 2003? Also can I setup this server on a windows XP professional machine ? Thanks !

I think that is true, and no you cannot setup Exchange on anything less than a server OS.

Yeah, Exchange server also requires active directory service which means you will have to create a domain in order for it to work on a server OS. Wouldn't recommend you trying if you aren't too familiar with windows server, as a server OS won't run some programs and is slower for normal everyday use.

I use exchange service
I have my x51v and Audiovox smartphone setup with exchange server through 1 & 1.com service for around six bucks a month. (other companies provide same exact service so do your research and let me know if you find somewhere better). All my info is stored remotely so its safe and what's cool is as soon as I enter something in my phone (task, new contact etc) it immediately syncs with my desktop and PDA.

I think what he meant was that he wanted to directly sync to a server via wifi and since this is removed from Activesync 4 it can only be done with a Exchange server setup.

I was thinking if I can setup a server on my desktop (win XP pro) and synchronize via wifi or via the internet when I am out, but I didn’t know that I need to pay a monthly fee. Also since it is only possible with server operating systems it looks impossible for me.

The only way you can sync wirelessly is through bluetooth. Also, it doesn't seem you can sync via internet away from home at the moment.

FYI - It will work with earlier versions of MS Exchange also (like MS Exchange 5.5)

Yes, but it won't work unless you've set up your exchange server properly as well.
