ActiveSync 3.7/3.8 after 4.1

Hi

Could anyone please let me know if they downgraded sucessfully from ActiveSync 4.1 to 3.7 or 3.8? I searched for this, but could not find anything, apologies if this has been already described.

I am trying to use again 3.8 after a not very good experience with WM5 and AS4.1.

The AXIM downgrade to WM2003SE worked perfectly with the DELL provided ROM, the I did the un-install of AS 4.1 and then installation of AS 3.8 - all worked fine too; the AXIM will connect as indicated both on its screen, as well as on the AS taskbar icon which will go green - but when I try to restore the AS (either by double click or right click and "open") - the AS program will not show. :activesyn
The icon will go grey again if the AXIM is being disconnected, then green again if connected back... I'll even get a pop-up promting for the password.

When trying to access the device (right click on AS taskbar icon / Explore) - it gives me the error:
"Failed to Start Remote Services. Critical communication services failed to start. Try resetting the mobile device, and then connect again."
At this point I tried many things, including Outlook re-install.
I disabled the firewall as well as NAV. Un-installed again, deleted folders, cleaned the registry manually - nothing; same behavior.

Then, I installed again the AS 4.1 - this one works just fine.

The PDA is x50v and it runs perfect again with WM2003SE, I can connect wireless to the Internet, all is OK.

The PC runs WinXP Pro SP2.

Thanks to all for helping.

You need to remove ActiveSync 4.1, reboot, delete C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync (the whole folder), and delete the following DLL's from C:\WINDOWS\System32: ceutil.dll, rapi.dll, and uicom.dll. You also should delete C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\NoteSync Forms. Then install 3.7/3.8. This is caused by a problem in the 4.0/4.1 uninstaller, where it fails to delete those files, and then the 3.7/3.8 installer doesn't overwrite them because they're newer. I managed to discover this by looking at the 3.8 installer logfile.

Yes I had 4.1 working well with WM2003SE until I upgraded and then downgraded and it all went to hell - so I uninstalled 4.1 and re-installed 3.8 and its fine - I used a third party uninstaller so whether that made for a cleaner uninstall process I'm not sure, I used Ashampoo, I also use Add Remove Plus.

You would be best off following those instructions I wrote... I based them off of the ActiveSync logfile giving errors about those dll's being newer than its copies.

Thanks a lot guys.
I tested more, and I've seen that AS 4.1 looks and does things same as 3.8 when connected to a WM2003, and not to WM5; so - I got back my sync options which I missed with WM5 (and I mistakenly thought are due to AS 4). Also, my WinXP locks went away - therefore, it is NOT the AS 4 with the PC problems and lack of support (including LAN synch) - but is the WM5.

I was having problems with activesync 4.0 and kept getting messages to reinstall Outlook. The popup window for syncranization would never come up, even though it asked for my password. Under HELP in outlook, I clicked on detect and repair. After that, I could sync the old way. When I tried deleting the .dll's, I had to reinsert my original office CD for the system to work again....
I've loaded WM 5.0 now and it's working - so far.

Cannot downgrade from 4.1 to 3.8

I want to downgrade to AS 3.8 to do wi-fi sync. Unfortunately, I've tried to uninstall 4.1, which seemed to work. I then try to install AS 3.8 and it ends at an error telling me that it found a newer version and to use "Add/Remove Progams" to uninstall first (which I'd already done). I also manually removed C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync (the whole folder), and deleted the following DLL's from C:\WINDOWS\System32: ceutil.dll, rapi.dll, and uicom.dll. Also deleted C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\NoteSync Forms. No luck.
I still cannot install 3.8 without the "newer version found" message. ANy ideas?

Also try deleting/renaming mobileV.acm

I don't know about the system telling you that 4.1 is still hanging around. I did notice that you did not mention removing mobileV.acm as well. Personally, I never found uicomm as was mentioned in the thread.

where is the log from my failed install located?--that should give me a big clue as to what makes it think that 4.1 is still there.

thanks,

thanks man!!! this worked like a champ. my Axim hasn't been able to sync in weeks since I uninstalled ActiveSync 4.1 and downgraded to WM2003. I'm going to copy your directions into a text file and place it in the folder on my server where I keep my PPC apps. :-)

Alternate method of removing activesync 4.1

To those who could not remove Activesync 4.1 using the above method, try this in regedit.

Remove the following keys:

HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services
HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr ent Version\Uninstall\Windows CE Services
HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services
HKey_Users\Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services

Nothing I tried worked until removing those keys and I was really getting frustrated until I found an article about removing AS 3.1 which led me to these keys. Hope this helps someone!

Thank you for your help. I am an Axim 5 user and I faced this same problem. I followed your instructions and the problem was resolved. Thank you for your help.:)
