My Active Sync 3.8 only lets me connect as Guest - why?
I uninstalled ActiveSync 4.0 because of another problem (I wasn't aware that WM2003 users should not use anything above ActiveSync 3.8) then I installed ActiveSync 3.8 but it doesn't give me the option to set up partnerships, it just automatically logs me in as Guest. It totally works but I'm bothered that I don't get that setup option anymore...
Go under the ActiveSync file menu and look for the partnerships section. Look in there to see if you already have partnerships listed. It's entirely possible that upgrading to AS 4 kept your old partnership info and created a new copy to work with version 4.
Since you can only have 2 partnerships, you may have to delete one if it shows 2.

Move along. There's nothing to read here.
You do not have admin rights to the PC
you are already synchronizing to two other PC
The partnerships of previous installation were not deleted
----- remove PDA from cradle
----- in ActiveSync go to File -> Delete Partnership - and delete any existing one
Hope this helps :approve:

But under File, all options are greyed out except 'Explore', 'Connection Settings,' and 'Close.'
The weird thing is at my job I get the option to set up a Standard Partnership' every time I connect - but I always sign on as 'Guest'.
But at home, I can't even get it to give me the choice anymore, no matter how many times I reinstall ActiveSync?
Is there maybe a third-party software I could try? I just want something more stable and reliable, thanks:)
I,too, can only connect as guest. I have Axim50v, not installed any new sw, and not changed any settings. As of two days ago, when I connect, it briefly flashes my PPC name and then quickly changes to guest. I have tried all of the tips found on here and the web except, uninst/reinst winxp sp2 with outlook and hard reset my ax. I have uninst/reinst AS 3.8, deleted all partnerships, deleted all references to AS in desktop and PPC registry, changed timezone, changed PPC name, unplugged USB cradle, rebooted, innumerable times. Am I destined to hard reset? I have a backup, but use my machine for work and all else, with many sw installed. Want to avoid this if at all possible. Any sage tips, advice, or commiserations? Thanks.

If your pda name shows up on top of the desktop AS when you open it up then there is a relationship already there. DISCONNECT the pda and then look under file>delete mobile device. it is only grayed out when the pda is connected or it just doesn't exist.

My name doesn't show up on my home pc...that's kind of the problem. It automatically signs me in as 'Guest' without giving me a choice to set up a partnership. I disconnected it and the Delete Partnerships option is still greyed out, even though I know it exists cause it shows up on m PC at work...
I actually have a friend whose willing to let me try out Intellisync - can I use that by itself or does it have to work with ActiveSync?
The fact that it shows up on the work pc only means that you have a relationship with that computer and nothing about the one at home. There are threads here that talk about the way to remove AS4.0. you have to delete some files and may have to reload Outlook. I dont know what other problems you were having with 4.0 but it worked fine for me when I was still running wm2003 se. Did you try the 4.1 update to see if it fixed your problems? I will look for the threads on how to remove 4.0
edit: Go to this thread , read all of the directions and replys before you try it. hope this helps.

Sorry but I have the same problem.
More details:
- WinXP Pro SP1, WM2003SE, X50v
- ActiceSync 4.1 works perfect with the exception of Avantgo, but I don't like the missing LAN sync, so
- I downgraded to ActiveSync 3.8 (successfully, I know I have to manually delete files).
- AS 3.8 connects only as GUEST. There is no available option to delete partnerships (greyed out), either connected or not. There are no options to pick up contacts, tasks, etc. - its like can not find Outlook? (but Outllok is there and worked just fine with AS 4.1)
I restarted the PC, soft reset the PDA, looked on every single Microsoft knowledge article containing ActiveSync and Guest, tried registry keys - nothing (other than that I learned other new things).
I then installed again AS 4.1 - sure enough, eveything works again perfectly (of course, with the exception of Avantgo...)
So - I appreciate any help from anyone out there that had this problem and fixed it. Again - believe me I tried everything else recommended based on "theoretical" approach on this forum and other ones.

Thanks.
I actually figured out what to do about the original issue I was having and went back to 4.0 (Build 4343). I was able to create my Partnership again and all has been well since.
Instead of 4.1, maybe you should try 4.0, if you haven't already? Good luck:)
