Question Bluetooth Sync...correct ports aren't listed...?

I got my first PDA ever yesterday, the Dell x51v. This is also the first time I've attempted to use Bluetooth. In other words, I'm pretty naive, so please bear with me.

After adjusting my firewall, I got USB cradle syncing to work fine. I can't get BT syncing to work though.

I'm trying to follow ActiveSync (4.1) help's "Connecting a mobile device to a PC"-->"Connect to Active Sync using BT." I get through Step 1, which only offers COM ports 7 and 8 on my Axim. On step 2 however, it says to select the port you did on the Axim in ActiveSync. However, the only COM ports that I'm allowed to choose are 1, 3, and 4, so obviously I can't continue with the instructions.

Lastly, I'm not sure what the passkey is all about. I've tried not using it at all and I've tried using it for both, but often when I enter it on one it deactivates syncing attempts on the other...? I've also deactivated the password protection on the device completely because I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it either.

Other possibly relevant info:
-I think my PC's BT port is COM4
-The devices recognize each other on BT, they just won't sync
-When I hit Sync via Bluetooth in ActiveSync on my Axim, it says I don't have a partnership with a BT ActiveSync enabled device. I've created a partnership with my PC but apparently it's only for "Serial Port" and "Dial-up Networking." Not sure if that includes BT Syncing.
-I've gotten it to give a "business card" contact entry through BT.

Any ideas? I tried looking through the forums and on google a bit, but I don't see anything that specifically addresses these issues.

Thanks!

I am running into the exact same thing with my x51v. But like you I am also new to this. There has to be a way to change the ports on the Axim just like you would on a PC.

I have and it works fabulously. I wonder what I'm doing right.

Not you necessarily, but it would be nice if someone who has gotten it to work on WM5 would explain their step-by-step process, as the help file method doesn't seem to be valid. There seem to be a lot of different ways you can try to do it, and maybe some are more effective than others.

Would anyone be so kind?

Success!!!

Good news, for me at least. I had to do a hard reset yesterday (for reasons not the least of which was me mucking up my system out of ignorance and beta versions of Sprite).

So, I tried the bluetooth syncing again and it worked! Here's exactly what I did with major steps and substeps listed, to the best of my memory:

1. Went to Bluetooth under the Connections tab in Settings on my Axim.
-Turned it on
-Made it visible to other devices
2. Went to the Devices tab in Bluetooth Settings on the Axim
-Created New Partnership with my PC
-Checked the Activesync box (this was not an option before the hard reset...just Dial-up networking and something else. Dial-up was still present and I left it unchecked just because but I don't think it matters)
-Saved the partnership
3. Went to the ActiveSync program on the Axim
-Told to Sync via Bluetooth
-Entered a passkey of my choosing on the Axim
4. Clicked on the balloon that popped up on my PC that said a device was trying to connect via BT and to click if I wanted to allow it
-Authorized the connection on my PC with the chosen passkey
-Authorized ActiveSync from a new balloon that popped up on my PC.
6. Success!

I checked the ports again and they still don't match up with what's available from other places, so I'm not quite sure that the help file is correct.

Good luck everyone!

Success!!! (addendum...)

Oops...I forgot another thing that may or may not be a very significant step.

I was messing around with my Network Connections settings on my PC out of frustration (right click one of the networked computer icons in the taskbar notification bars to access). Anyway, I right clicked on the Bluetooth icon and selected Properties. Then I clicked on the Authentication tab and unchecked "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentification for this networked." I did not check this in the first place, so it's probably the default config. Still, the passkey was required.

Again, I have no idea if that had anything to do with it, but it's definitely worth a shot if you're still having trouble.

I finally got this to work:) I had to go to dells web site to update my laptops bluetooth stack ( latitude D810 ). After that it did not work untill I went into activesync on my laptop and allowed connections to com 7 in the connection settings. Then I set up a new outgoing port on my axim of com 7, then all of a sudden after creating a new partnership with my laptop, Activesync is available to use on my Axim and I can sync with success. Thanks for your help in this.

Yay! Thanks for the help. I know I'm supposed to be an old hand at this, but I always had the cradle to sync with. Until the cradle broke. Now I can do this via activesync! It was easier than I thought. Do it via New Connection... Activesync, vs. Explore a BT device. Gotta be specific on this one.

I still can't sync with PC via BT. When I tap from axim's Activesync "Connect via Bluetooth" I get the message "Cannot find existing Bluetooth partnership with a PC that supports ActiveSync. Would you like to set up a partnership now?". Of course I have set a partnership with PC before... On my PC I use a D-link USB Bluetooth adapter, and I cannot set Com7 or Com8...
Any sugestions?

Hey! Initial sync worked and I restored from a backup, but it doesn't connect for ActiveSync anymore! Gotta check settings when I get home.

You must create an ActiveSync partnership first. Open the Bluetooth Manager, tap New, then select ActiveSync via Bluetooth to set up the partnership.
Hope this helps.

I did that, but only service found is "Serial port", and "ActiveSync" isn't at all... Look at this:

Oh whoops, you have an X51v. I don't think you can sync with BlueTooth using WM5.
