If you are running windows XP you have to turn off your firewall to be able to sync it, I did the same thing and spent about an hour on the phone waiting to talk to someone and then BAM it was Microsuck's screw up. Take it out of the cradel than click off your firewall, and re sync

What items are you syncing? Are you syncing contacts? How many do you have? What about emails? I think it all depends on how much stuff you have with Outlook(I assume). I have a few hundred contacts, a few dozen appointments and no email. It took about 30 secs to 1 min for the first time. After that, it was like 10 secs if I have anything updated.

I hope it helps.

Thats prett much what I ended up doing, but I didnt like that idea. Is there really no way around that?

Kind of off topic but is syncing the only way transfer files ie, pictures, programs etc?

Thanks for the help

I'm having a similar problem. I connect the 51v and it recognizes the PDA and Active Sync says "connecting" but never says "Connected". I remove the 51v and drop in the cradle my 50v and it syncs without fail. I've removed all firewalls, resat the cradle, reinstalled the activesync software, downgraded to 4.0, and zilch. Nothing happens. It could sit for hours without anything happening. I even went as far to creat a new profile on the PC and it still will not connect. But the 50v is a sure thing, no problems.

The 51v is version 5.1.7 and the 50v is 4.21.1008

I've tried this...

I purchased and received a new Dell X51v Axim PDA. I followed all procedures for synching the PDA with my laptop with no success. i installed ActiveSync 4.1 first. Connected the USB cradle to my laptop and then connected the PDA to the cradle. ActiveSync would not find the PDA. Interestingly, my laptop knew that I was connecting the PDA because it was showing up as an additional network adapter in "Network Neighborhood" and in device manager. Dell said that it was something with my firewall or antivirus or antispyware software. Not! I read on some website that ActiveSync needed a successful network connection to function properly. It finally dawned on me that after I connected the PDA to my laptop I should check my "properties" of the "mobile device" in the network adapter section in network neighborhood. I found that "client for Microsoft networks", "File and Printer sharing", and "TCP/IP" was disabled or unchecked. I checked all 3 of these and WHAM my PDA started synching.

...but still nothing. Any guesses?

One thing that I found in order to pinpoint the problem was to uncheck all sync options (in active sync window - tools, options). And then one by one add the calendar then sync. Add the contacts then sync, etc. There could be a conflict with one of the options. Mine was with favorites. I know how frustrating it is to not be able to sync, especially when in a hurry.

It's not finishing "connecting" and changing to "connected" like it has resolved the link but the PDA and the PC aren't finalizing the link.

Yeah, I saw this in another thread but I cannot uncheck any options because the "options" item in the tools menu is grey'd out.

No solution, but a similar problem. Each time I drop my X51v in the cradle, the "Looking for Changes" phase takes 4-6 minutes! Then it always syncs. If it stays in the cradle, subsequent syncs are very quick. I chatted with a Dell tech about it. He said that ActiveSync has to run through all your files (depending, of course, on how many things you have selected to sync) and sort through them all to find the changed or new files. If you are syncing a lot of stuff, it will take longer. But this problem I am having has recurred right after a Hard Reset, and comlete removal and reinstallation of Outlook 2002 and ActiveSync 4.1. I haven't even restored my data files yet. I DO have everything except Notes and Media set to sync. But about a week ago, when I had this thing fully loaded, it wasn't having the "looking" problem it is having now. I haven't solved this yet. One post suggested unchecking all but a single sync selection and then adding them back in and watchng the result. I'm going to try that.

Thanks for this response. I've been here sitting for 30 mins. Found this thread and you answered my question.

But I have another one - Does this mean that my firewall has to be off all the time to sync?

The only solution I can give you guys is HARD RESET.Everything said in this thread has happened to me and whatever i have tried has not been successful.
I think that everything comes from the ActiveSync on the PDA. It seems to ignore the PC.
Perhaps it has something to do with the "fake server" solution.(see sticky's notes).I do not know.

What I know is that nothing but a hard reset helps!

I wouldn't call it a solution but it is the only way you can get your pda to sync unfortunately.

1. Backup your data using the wm5 backup utility.
2. Hard reset.
3. Restore the backup file.

If all of a sudden the backup appears to be corrupted, do not worry. just try again to restore the file and if this does not work then hard reset again and try to restore the backup file.

This will help syncing for a week. After that repeat when want to sync.

I hope that helps!!!
