ActiveSync on Axim x51v crashing

I was able to sync via usb or BT for quite some time, then one day I started getting the "Synchronization Error" in ActiveSync. Previously I could just reboot the PC and/or the Axim and it would resolve but this time it never did. I went back through recent programs and uninstalled them - and I realized that I had installed SK Tools and "optimized" my Axim, including some things involving network settings. It's the trial version so only TCP Window Size, Default TTL, and IP multicasting were choices to change.

Now I have
TCP Window Size = 98304
Default TTL = 128
IP multicasting = 2

Those are what I got when I told SK Tools to set back to default. (Are these the correct defaults?)

Anyway, sync worked for a while after that so I thought everything was fine. Today I got the problem again.

When I sync, I often get crashing errors on my Axim, without any info on the Desktop other than "Synchronization Error". The Axim is still connected and I can browse/copy programs etc. Usually the crashes I get on the Axim are device.exe, gwes.exe, and repllog.exe.

Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this?

I have tried it with Norton enabled and disabled (I have applied the Microsoft-instructed settings) but it seems like a firewall shouldn't cause my Axim to crash...
