Aximsiteactivesyncicon Connecting as Guest only? Here's a fix.

After 2 days of banging my head against a wall, I figured out that this issue is sometimes caused by a registry setting on the PPC. If you've tried the other stuff and it didnt help, try this.

Open a registry editer (I use Tillanosoft TRE) and look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\. Erase everything under P1 and P2, soft reset, and you should be good to go.

I don't know exactly what caused the problem I was having. To troubleshoot I made a backup with sprite, and hard reset my x50v. When I plugged the Axim in it partnered up just fine, and subsequent cradlings (is that even a word lol) worked fine also. Since all but 1.5MB of my programs are in BIS, I figured the problem was the registry. I exported the 'stock' registry and restored the backup I made. Activesync connected as guest after the soft reset. Wonderful, huh? I exported the registry and compared them. The GUID under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\P1 was different for my PC, so I erased it and did another soft reset. I could have hugged my monitor when it showed that it synced as Axim, my PPC name.

It didn't quite work as simply as that for me - deleting the entries had no effect. I then tried copying the PId of the working freshly hard-reset install to that from my backed up regular one. This made AS cry about a device ID already being in use. I was about to delve further into the registry when I decided to try deleting the entry for P1 AND reinstalling AS. This seemed to do the trick. It's possible that the forced reboot did it rather than the reinstall, although I had been stopping and starting the AS process before. Although it prompted me to setup a partnership, it never asked for a name, and instead used the last one I'd tried, which to my amazement worked. Weird.

Thanks though, I wouldn't have got it going without your tip. :)

Aaargh! Just had to soft reset and now the thing won't sync again. What a useless piece of software.

I had activesync 4.1 on my dell x5 and also received many error messages.

This is what I did.

Deleted the software completely from my computer through (Add/remove programs, Windows explorer, Search - look for Wcescomm.exe and Microsoft activesync.

Disconnected the pda [this is important] and rebooted the computer [winXP].

Reinstalled activesync 3.8.
In connection settings box, checked Allow usb connection settings and Show status only.

It worked for about a week with everything, caledar, inbox, files, avantgo, ect.

And then like you, I went into guest mode.

So, With my X5 connected, I opened device manager on my computer and deleted the Dell under Win CE USB devices - you can do this WITHOUT rebooting the computer, keep trying to delete if it asks you to reboot. Once it deletes and you hear the hardware disconnect sound, remove the Dell from its cradle, soft reset it and turn it off.

Returned it to the cradle, and my computer found new hardware named Dell Axim X5.

Activesync found its old partnership, updated, and I'm back in business.

Hope this works for you.

Microsoft activesync is a terrible program, but until there's a better one - keep
sinking, I mean syncing!
