Microsoft to update ActiveSync with release of Vista OS

REDMOND, Wash.—Microsoft Corp. is expected to overhaul ActiveSync, its Windows Mobile device management offering, when the software giant rolls out the next version of its PC operating system later this year.
Microsoft will change the service’s name to Windows Mobile Device Center with the launch of the new OS, dubbed Vista. Microsoft outlined some of the planned changes in a “step by step guide” for the new version of the service posted on its Web site.

ActiveSync allows users to synchronize data between mobile devices and PCs using Outlook or Exchange; the product also supports the transfer of files from Windows Media Player.

“All of the features previously available in ActiveSync are available in Windows Vista, including smartphones and pocket PCs,” according to Microsoft’s site. “However, most of the user interface has changed in an effort to enhance your ability to easily and intuitively find device-related tasks and improve the overall usability of those tasks.”
