Loong first sync, and a LOT of uploading...

How long does the first sync with Active Sync 4.1, WM5.0, Dell Axim x51v, take? Its dragging on and on...30 minutes now, and nothing seems to happen except that it is uploading a whole lot to the internet.

What exactly does it need to update? I mean, I got enough spyware on my computer - dont need dell/ms to snoop any more than they already are doing...Shouldnt it be downloading stuff instead??

How do you know its uploading to the Internet? Also, are you syncing files? They can a long time if file sizes are large. You can try disabling firewalls to see if speeds improve.

Well, I downloaded an updated Active Sync 4.1, reinstalled it, and closed my firewall/antivirus (after unplugging internet ofcourse).

That way I can actually get the device connected to the computer, but I always seem to get a sync-error, so I havent been able to perform a first successful sync yet.

Should I hard-reset the pda, and reinstall everything again? And if so, how do I hard-reset?

I've found the first sync, especially when you have a lot of items you want to combine with your device, works best if you limit.

Instead of having all the items checked from the start, actually do not include any checked items. Then, once the device and PC have set up a partnership, go into Tools, Options... in ActiveSync on the PC and check just one item (I usually do the contacts first since that is the single biggest dataset I'm adding to the PPC) and click on OK. Once it tells you synchronization is complete, you can open Tools, Options... and check another item. It even helps sometimes to uncheck the first item (note, this does not remove the items from your PPC, it simply stops the addition of any new ones. Since it's just been seconds since you just did the synchronization, there are not any new items anyway).

Keep up the process until everything you want has been checked off once. Then you can go back in and recheck everything you want to keep synchronized so new items will be added during future syncs.

That sounds like a good idea.

I finally got it working - required me to exit my antivirus (panda). On to more pleasant things with my new pda now, I hope :)

Thanks for the input :)
