I've been trying to sync my X51v for several days since I received the new PDA. I have set ZA to allow the 4 files needed for activesync. It would connect, but never sync unless I shut down ZA. It would only sync if ZA was shutdown ... which is dangerous, even if you physically disconnect from the internet. If you're like me, someday you may forget to relaunch ZA after a sync.
Anyway, I went to the FIREWALL tab on ZA Free Version, clicked on ZONES, and found the Mobile Device listed as "Internet" under under ZONE. I changed the setting to "TRUSTED" and the PDA synced immediately.
I'm certainly no expert in this field, but after fighting this and finding something that worked, I thought it was worth sharing with other Axim folks.

Thats the same thing I did and it works great. The information on M$ site on fire walls and AS only talks about the purchased Zone Alarm not the free one (at least at the time I was struggling with this issue).
Hey i have bee trying to find a fix for this forever. I used to have it working fine but then I reformatted my hard drive and here I am. I have changed the settings like you said but it still will not sync...it just says 'connecting' for ages. What are the four progs. you have allowed access? I have only 3 that say activesync...so looking for the fourth. Any ideas? Thx.

Same phenomenon, and same solution that has proven working!
My mobile device was listed under the name "windows mobile-based device"; I changed the setting to "trusted", and whoopie the device synced.
Many thanks.
Hi,
I *think* that I followed all these instructions, but to no avail.
could you please specify a step by step fix for this?
I granted full access to the four apps, and added the expert rule, and switched to "trusted" in the zones tab, but I still can't get my device to be detected.
can anyone help please?

Idea: try to turn off zone alarm manually; then try to sync; if it works at least you know a)how to sync; b)that the problem is somewhere in ZA

Was the Ax plugged in? When I did this I need mine to be plugged in and trying to sync so it showed up on the list and then I was able to change and save the settings in ZA.
The thing I noticed about WM5 vs 2003SE is that WM5 just seemed to tell the PC what was what (I didn't need to go through the setup process for AS) hence ZA seeing it as a threat whereas with 2003SE you have to go through a setup process - thislast bit is just a thought.
THANK YOU! for this bit of info. I had been attempting to sync my 51v for about 9 hours, even leaving it to "sync" for 4 hours and nothing. I followed all the tips on the Microsoft site and even loaded the 4.2 beta verstion of AS. Finally I came across your post, went into my FREE ZA, changed the setting to 'trusted' as you indicated and now I am a happy person!
Keep passing this on....
