Random behaviour from AS3.8

I'm getting random behaviour from AS3.8 (used for occasional wifi syncing). Most of the time it comes up saying connecting and then says conected but the icon in the system tray is still gray and I can't select add/remove programs or anny access through Mobile Device in my computer. On the ODD occasion it say's connected and the system tray icon turns green and I can use add/remove but still unable to browse the files on the device. I can delete the profile and connect as a guest EVERY time with access to the add/remove programs but no access to files on my device. I have remove AS removed all traces of it in the registry and all the .dll files from windows and then reinstalled it, still the SAME problem. The ERROR I get when trying to access Mobile Device in my computer is "critical communications services have failed to start. Try resetting the mobile device, and then connect again". I have tried a hard reset of the device but that's not it. The strange thing is that even when it has failed to connect AS is still in the tray on the Axim X50v running WM2003se. has anybody any ideas on this, thanks.
