I have no idea where else to go to for guidance than here. Something is terribly wrong , either with my Activesync or my dell x50v. They are only able to connect with each other after i hard reset my dell, and reinstall activesync. But today, I tried, just reinstalling activesync.. it still does not connect. What is wrong? It's not the firewall.. i've checked it under the exceptions. I even downloaded and installed the version 4.2 but it still does not seem to work.. in fact, when I tried repairing 4.2, it says it's repairing 4.0!!!.. arrghhh...
I use a USB to connect to my laptop from my pocket pc.. and everytime, i hook the USB in, my computer detects a dell axim hardware. That's it! No activesync pop up like it used to. sniff. please help. i'm desperate

Secret, which OS do you have wm5 or wm2003se? If you have wm2003se then you're using the wrong version of Active Sync. You need 3.8. This should be the solution. If not, you have to do a search to find it. You cannot just delete 4.x, you have to go thru a whole process, otherwise you're wasting your time.
If you have more questions please post them.

My ppc's wm2003se... so I can't use a version 4.x? why is that?
I uninstalled it through the add/remove programs in the control panel. Is that the right thing to do? It only worked when I reinstalled activesync and hard reset my ppc.. only worked once after that. It doesn't the 2nd time I try to connect after 'fixing' it.

Version 4.x is for wm5. Removing it thru add/remove is not enough. You must purge the registry of any traces of active sync before installing 3.8. Find the instructions to downgrade to 3.8. They're not that easy but lots of people, including me, have done it. I gave you a link.

I'm on WM2003SE and using AS 4.1 with no problems. I originally started out with 3.8, but since I've tried the WM5 upgrade several times, I just left the AS 4.1 installed.
I'd give the stevenator's advice a try, but if that doesn't work then perhaps the problem is the device itself?

AS4.x should work fine for all of these pda's but you will lose the ability to sync via wifi. I would try stopping all of the obvious things like firewalls and antivirus programs. Then when it is connected you should look at the properties on the connection that is created to be sure that all 3 of the boxes in there are checked. Another possibility is if you are using a usb hub try connecting it directly to the pc. A friend of mine had ths same symptom on his laptop. it turned out that the port replicator (docking station) didn't handle the usb very well. when he connected it directly to the laptop it worked just fine.

Dear all, as I started this thread, I had also tried my luck of downloading and installing the new Activesync 4.2 beta. it worked!!! for a while..
now it's not working again. and the same problem had occured, no response from the computer when i hook my pocket pc through the USB.. just a hardware detection notice. So i decided to revert back to activesync 3.8.. but there were more than 2 dlls in the program files. there were like 12-14~!!.. help... sigh
