Active sync+Active Directory+ Exchange=annoying problem

First off hi all. I'm an Ipaq user (from Mobility Site) who also has a X51 for work and has to support over 400 Axim users. Altho I've never signed up to the site before now I have been reading it for a good year and the advice on here is amazing so thanks for all the help so far with other faults.

Anyway here is my current issue its a bit long winded so please bear with me.

First the fault.

Active sync keeps hanging when trying to sync. It will sync but stops for 2 - 3 mins first. First setup it hangs for about 5 mins before running through and then every time you remove and re insert the PDA it hangs again for about 2 - 3 mins then runs through fine.

First things I've tried.

I've tried a new Ipaq 4700 for reference with no difference. I also used a Axim X51 and that has the same problem with this one user as well.

tried all versions of active sync 3.8, 4.0 and 4.1 and all of them have the same problem. I had to use active sync 4.0 and 4.1 to test with the X51 as its WM 2005 but still the same problem. I also thought it might be being caused by people getting upgraded from 3.8 to 4.1 with there new Axims and that 3.8 had not been removed properly but manually removed 3.8 and any traces of other versions and reinstalled 4.1 still the same problem.

We are using exchanged linked in with AD and if I log onto the PC as the end user and try and sync his mailbox its hangs as above. However if I log in as exchange admin account map his mail box then its syncs 100% perfect and really quick. Fine I thought must be a permission problem somewhere in exchange or AD however the user has full rights to his own mail box and giving him local admin permissions makes no difference at all plus he has no other problems with his mail just this niggle. I'm sync'ing with outlook locally on USB and not directly with exchange.

I've also tried all this on another PC and the problem follows the user. so can't be the PC/PDA/USB or Software.

This is effecting about 15 users and they have nothing in common that I can find. Some are running windows 2000 some XP some have 3.8 some have 4.1 some have Ipaqs and some have Axims. Thought it might be some of the recent windows updates but would have expected it to affect more users if that was the case. However I did remove the most recent updates just to be sure but again no difference.

I figure it has to be something to do with linking through outlook\Exchange\Active Directory but I can't figure it out. Can anyone explain how Active Sync works when sync'ing with the local PC. Does it actually access exchange or does it just take the outlook info from the local information? Whats involved with the sync process?

Anyone else ever seen similar problems?

If I've not explained it too well then please ask any questions and I'll try to get as much information up as possible. I know this is not your normal Active Sync problems but if there are any other IT support guys out there with similar setups help?

Thanks for any tips or advice you could give.

Syncing with Exchange should be pulling from the server, just like the desktop clients do. I haven't had the "luxury" :) of being able to do this, but we're testing the exchange features soon so we'll see how it goes.

It still sounds like a permissions problem. Have you tried temporarily giving the end-users domain admin permissions? Try that and then sync and see what happens. At this stage, you shouldn't assume anything.

Hate to mention it but you might have to contact MS. You could also try looking on some Exchange/AD forums.

Cheers Safsax. The PDA's are sync'ing with the local outlook file not with exchange. Forgot to add about Domain admin, if in the group it does allow it to sync normally.

The info I need to know is what active sync is doing when the axim is put in the cradle. What tunnels does it try to create? As I'm syncing local it shouldn't have to access the exchange server.
