activesync over internet!

i need to be able to sync over the internet (thru bluetooth phone). i keep searching this site, I'VE EVEN READ THE OWNERS MANUAL! however, the manual wants me to refer to HELP in the activesync program anyways. so yeah..

i have updated to AS 4.1.0 and i use trend micro pc-cillin internet security 2k6 as firewall on my pc. i still cannot configure it properly so i can use terminal services, so i just turn off the firewall when i leave. (i know, it's pointless) but i really don't have the time to figure out settings for both terminal services and activesync.

so if anyone could enlighten me as to how to set activesync up for connection over the internet, as well as firewall settings, it would be much obliged. and if you could also throw some firewall settings for terminal services at me, that'd be pretty sweet too! thx for your help in advance.

ActiveSync 4.x doesn't support network syncing (which is what you're talking about). Sorry.

You could set up an exchange server and sync to that.

Yeah, but what a hassle! I have Windows Server 2003 availble for me to run thru VMWare, but the installation process of Exchange Server........ ugggg.... Dont even think about it. Maybe I'll do it over the summer. Plenty of free time.

ok, if i were to downgrade to 3.x, would i be able to network sync? this really sucks! my main thing is getting my email. but let's say i got my mail with outlook on my axim- checked it and interacted, etc. it wouldn't show up in my outbox on my home pc then. would it? why can't all my toys just get along!?!

Yes, if you downgraded to 3.x, you could network sync. It's pretty tricky but it is possible.

P.S. It involves setting up a VPN connection/server(which you can do with XP as the server).

For personal email, I just use pop/smtp access--works fine.

I was syncing fine with activesync 3.8 via wifi without setting up a vpn connection--no problems. I now have X51v and was forced to use activesync 4.2--no more wifi syncing

Were you inside your LAN or outside. If you're inside, you don't have to. But if your outside, you do since AS looks for the NetBIOS name (that's the security issue MS talks about). You almost always have to also edit the host file on the PDA with the IP address of the desktop to the NetBIOS name of the desktop. I say almost always because if you have a router that acts as the VPN server and can send out NetBIOS packets through the VPN, you don't have to edit the host file.
