New Axim and MS KB890927

Hi all,

I recently purchased a new X51v to my wife as a replacement for her old Palm M505.

She has been too busy at work and else to complete the transfert from her Palm Easysynch/Hotsync on her work PC (W2k) to the new Axim but she is getting there next week with the help of her IS folks.

In the mean time, I tryied to load the Activesync on her laptop (Inspiron 8200) running XP SP1. The Activesync version she got with the Axim is 4.1 and her axim ROM version is A06. In short, I was able to install the Activesync program on her laptop but failed to recognize the Axim when I docked it to the craddle. The craddle was connected to the usb port at the rear of her laptop (no hub here). I had turnout the virus and firewall stuff prior to the installation of activesync.
The laptop found the new hardware and start asking me to insert CD for my new hardware (I do not recalled having to do that when I installed my own Axim 51v on my work laptop (Dell D600 running XP SP1). At that point I cancelled not knowing what to do and proceed with loading Activesync and trying to establish a connection for a parternership.

I then tried to dock her Axim on my laptop to see if my laptop (and active sync 4.0) would recognize her axim and start asking me for a partnership to be setup. Instead, it told me the new hardware found thing and asked me to insert the CD that has the file RNDISMPX.SYS as per service article KB890927 ). I am confused now.

Why would my laptop which works perfectly with my Axim 51v running ROM A06 would not work with her Axim and is asking me the bloody file???

I now think the guys from her IS dept will have issues with setting up her Axim on her desktop (which runs W2K SP4) and might give up on her leaving her in limbo.

I would like to offer this guy all I know about this and hope he wont throw the towels too easily on her. Otherwise she will be left with an Axim that cannot fully replace her old Palm. Her Palm setup is quite stable with the exception that sometimes the Palm just dies on her and hardreset is required.

Anyway, sorry for the long reading but I read so much trouble with the installation of Activesync that I dont know where to start.

Anybody knows anything about this KB?. By the way, the file is question cannot be downloaded from MS site. You have to call and probably pay $$$ for it which I think stinks a lot after having paid all the $$$ for an MS product that is so touchy to install.

Thanks

Well one thing would be to download and install Activesync 4.2 beta.

ActiveSync can be a bit complicated to setup initially. Once the device pairs, your golden. I've had several different units from different brands and I've always experienced this.

I do not even use Activesync because it only basically syncs up emails from outlook. Because of this Outlook MUST be installed and prolly setup. You can by-pass it but it doesn't like to. Without Outlook, I don't even think it will install properly.

As long as you have the Axim setup to update its files over the network on its own, you really don't even need the PC except for installing updates. I personally do not like Activesync because it is complicated.

Any files I need from my PC I just transfer with my SD card to and fro. My weather, RSS and email all update from the Axim.

Well, I am not using it to sync with outlook on my work laptop because we are using Groupewise. I just do the file thing and download the program.

My wife will be using it to sync her agenda, to do list, some files and maybe I say maybe the Emails when she will be away on trips. They are using Lotus notes at her place so she will be using Intellisync for that. But even Intellysinc needs Activesync to communicate to the PDA. All (I know off) third party sync softaware (conduite) need Activesync to communicate with the WM5 PDA. Her Palm is using Easysynch pro to sync with LouteNotes and Esaysynch pro needs Hotsync (Palm) to communicate with the Palm.

If you need to transfer only files, I agree with you that she can do this differently but she needs her agenda to be synch with the rest of the group she is working with.

So what you are saying is that you do not use Activesync at all?
